Finding My Rhythm: How Movement Helps Me Manage My ADHD
Save this item - "Finding My Rhythm: How Movement Helps Me Manage My ADHD"I never suspected I had ADHD until I started working for Mind as a Mental Health Advisor, and hearing about other people’s experiences similar to mine. Getting a diagnosis felt like someone had finally handed me the missing piece of a puzzle. Suddenly, so much made sense but knowing was just the beginning. I was still me, but now I knew I needed to find ways to work with my ADHD, not against it.
On difficult days, ADHD can feel paralysing. Small sensory things that others might not even notice – lots of noise, busy environments, overlapping conversations – can become completely overwhelming physically and mentally.
But I’ve discovered something powerful: movement is medicine.
Six years ago, I started attending yoga classes. Honestly, it was like therapy. That hour each week became my sanctuary, a coping mechanism that I still treasure today which I’ve incorporated into my daily routine.
Now, my approach to managing ADHD is all about mindfulness and really tuning into what my body and mind need in any given moment. I do a mix of yin yoga, Dance HIT classes and walking, always asking myself: does my mind need to slow down right now? Do I need to quieten these racing thoughts? Or do I need to feel the fire in my muscles and release all this built-up energy?
I also love being near water – there’s something about it that just grounds me. Walking beside water helps calm my mind while giving me space to move and breathe. Sometimes I walk slowly, taking in every detail around me. Other times, I walk fast, letting my body burn through the restless energy that ADHD brings.
All of these things together – the walks, the yoga, the dance, the mindfulness, looking at the flow of the water near me – this helps ground my mind, calm me or release energy when it’s bubbling over. It’s about having different tools in my toolkit for different moments.
If you have ADHD, I want you to know this: you are enough. Experiment with different types of movement and remember that some days will be harder than others – and that’s part of the journey.
Whatever your journey looks like, I hope you find your rhythm too.
