This is the first of a series of Sound Walks on the Hoo Peninsula

Free Walk on Thursday 28 August 2025 at 10am

We will walk and listen together, led by artist Jane Pitt.

The sounds we hear will be noted and added to a Hoo Sounds Map as the project progresses.

This walk is focused on the sounds of the intertidal Thames shoreline, sea wall and marshland including the opportunity to listen underwater through a hydrophone.

Free transport is available for ticket holders, pick-up/drop-off points at Strood and Hoo.

Open to: Adults (18+) + Adults with older children (suggested 10+; children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver)

The path is uneven and sandy in places requiring sturdy shoes.

The path is on one level with some slopes.

Please check the weather and dress accordingly, it can sometimes be more windy at the coast than inland.

The Hoo Peninsula has a distinct soundscape shaped by its geography, human & non-human activity; including both tidal rivers Medway & Thames which meet at Grain; its buildings & homes, marshland & mudflats, industrial quarrying and agricultural activity etc..

Sonic seasons alter with the cycles of plants, trees, flood, drought, temperature, insects & birds. Sounds arrive, remain & disappear.
